Taraneh M, the young woman we reported on two days ago has been murdered. […]. As we said we have been in contact with one of her friends […]. […] We asked her friend (who will be referred to as Sh. here) to give us a short interview and provide us with more details about this appalling tragedy.

“Taraneh was very beautiful and very kind, she used to sing with a beautiful warm voice and played the piano with skill. I cannot imagine that all this life and beauty should be buried under dust and dirt, without mercy.”

Sh. is speaking haltingly, and I ask her:

When did the family learn that the body had turned up?

“They went to Ghazvin yesterday to get her burned body. But as much as we asked them they wouldn’t tell us any details and neither did they tell us where they want to bury her. They have been threatened heavily and are very afraid.”

Was Taraneh arrested on 7th Tir (28th June) near Ghoba mosque?

“Yes. On that day, Taraneh was wearing a green shawl and manteau and high heeled shoes and because she also had beautiful green eyes, she probably caught the attention of the plain clothes agents. But she wasn’t participating in the rally and she cried and said so many times to the agents, but they threw her into a van with other detainees. Her car was parked in the vicinity and she was on the way to her Beauticians’ Training Establishment which is situated near Hosseinie Ershad.”

And then they brought her to a detention center?

Yes, they brought her and about 40 other blindfolded boys and girls secret detention center, a building with high walls on Pasdaran Street, and put them in a large room. They were harassing the girls very much and Taraneh’s interrogation took longer than the others’…

Did Taraneh give her phone number to the others there?

“Yes, when she had come back to the others from her long interrogation she said she had been harassed and she asked some other girls and boys to call her parents and some of her friends and tell them that she had been arrested. She was crying all the time, and when they allowed all the girls except her to call home briefly she grew even more worried.

Then they took all the detainees away from this building, some were taken to Evin and others to Nobonyad police station. Only Taraneh they kept with them, which worried all the other detainees.”

And afterwards, were her family and friends contacted?

“Yes, the other detainees who were freed the same evening or in the next days and had the numbers were all worried about Taraneh’s state, as they had seen the savage behaviour of the agents. They called Taraneh’s family and friends and told them she had been arrested.

And did the family follow up on her?

“Yes, after some days they found her Pride car near her workplace but there was no trace of her until last week…”

…when an unidentified person called…

“Yes, an unidentified person, probably one of her abductors, called and said Taraneh had a moral problem and that she hadn’t been arrested at all. He said she had been raped and her womb and anus had been torn and she had wanted to kill herself by throwing herself in front of a car. He said she had been brought to Emam Khomeini Hospital in Karaj and that she had also tried to kill herself there with a serum tube.

The family immediately went to the hospital but Taraneh’s name wasn’t registered at the hospital. However one of the nurses confidentially told one of her friends that some days previously a girl answering these particulars had been brought to the hospital in a state of unconscious and had been removed again after a couple of hours.

Hearing this, we guessed that Taraneh had probably been brought to the hospital in the last moments of her life after suffering repeated rape. We grew very worried.”

At this stage, what enquiries did Taraneh’s family make?

“Our main problem was the family’s silence and the fear they had that the story would come out. Taraneh’s mother and father are very religious and over sixty, Taraneh was their only child, which they had had after years of praying and longing and medication, and they had given her a good life. But when this happened they became very afraid and didn’t talk to us any more. But after all we are her friends too and have a right to know where her body is and where she will be buried!”

Is there no information at all about the funeral ceremony?

“No. Yesterday the family were informed that a burned corpse answering Taraneh’s description had been found in the desert between Karaj and Qazvin. The family has been threatened severely not to talk about their daughter’s arrest.”

Now that this story has come out in the media and in the weblogs, do you think the truth will be found out?

“I just want Taraneh’s voice to go on, and our call that our most beautiful friend has been cruelly taken from us, that they have raped her brutally for several days and then burned her lifeless body and tossed her out in the desert.

When Taraneh sang, her beautiful voice was always in my ear, but from yesterday until now I have only been hearing her screams. Taraneh’s suffering was over, but our pain and suffering will remain with us as long as we live, she was our Taraneh (=song).”

About 35 Islamic protesters, dressed in dark clothes and with many masking their faces, carried banners and chanted slogans such as "British soldiers: terrorists".

The group confronted police officers and briefly fought with them, leaving one officer with a head injury requiring hospital treatment, and three arrests were made.

Around 50 counter demonstrators from the far-right English Defence League gathered nearby but officers kept the two sides apart.

Rape within marriage is 'impossible', claims Muslim cleric

A senior Muslim cleric in charge of Britain’s largest group of sharia law courts has claimed that there is no such thing as rape within marriage.

Sheikh Maulana Abu Sayeed said that sex without a wife’s consent was “not good” but could not be called rape.

Sheikh Sayeed, president of the Islamic Sharia Council, was criticised by police and moderate Muslims, who warned that his remarks would make women more reluctant to report sexual assaults.

Rape within marriage has been illegal in Britain since 1991. But according to Sheikh Sayeed, rape is defined in Islamic law as adultery by force. Therefore, if a husband forces himself upon his wife the attack cannot be termed “rape”, he said.

In an interview with the website The Samosa, he said: “Clearly there cannot be any ‘rape’ within the marriage. Maybe ‘aggression’, maybe ‘indecent activity’.

“It is not an aggression, it is not an assault, it is not some kind of jumping on somebody’s individual right. Because when they got married, the understanding was that sexual intercourse was part of the marriage, so there cannot be anything against sex in marriage. Of course, if it happened without her desire, that is no good, that is not desirable. But that man can be disciplined and can be reprimanded.”

Dave Whatton, Chief Constable of Cheshire and spokesman on rape for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said most rapes were committed by someone known to or in a relationship with the victim.

“It is a fundamental principle that sharia law should not replace the laws of the UK,” he said. “Putting out views that rape can be dealt with in another way fundamentally undermines everything we are trying to do.”

13 Year Old Yemeni Child Bride Tied Up, Raped – Bled To Death

SHUEBA, Yemen (AP) — A 13-year-old Yemeni child bride who bled to death shortly after marriage was tied down and forced to have sex by her husband, according to interviews with the child’s mother, police and medical reports.

The girl’s mother, Nijma Ahmed, 50, told the Associated Press that before her daughter lost consciousness, she said that her husband had tied her up and forced himself on her. “She looked like she was butchered,” she said about her daughter’s injuries.

Elham Assi, 13, bled to death hours after she spoke to her mother and just days after she was married to a 23-year-old man. She died on April 2 in the deeply poor Yemeni village of Shueba, some 200 kilometers northwest of the capital. Her husband, Abed al-Hikmi, is in police custody.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in Yemen where a quarter of all females marry before the age of 15, according to a 2009 report by the country’s Ministry of Social Affairs. Traditional families prefer young brides because they are seen as more obedient and are expected to have more children.

Legislation to ban child brides has been stalled by opposition from religious leaders. There has been no government comment over the case.

The girl — one of eight siblings — was pushed into marriage after an agreement between her brother and her future-husband to marry each other’s sisters to avoid having to pay expensive bride-prices — a common arrangement in Yemen, the poorest country in the Middle East.

According to police notes from the interrogation of the husband, he was upset because he could not consummate their relationship and felt under pressure to prove his manhood.

Assi’s mother said she also tried to persuade her daughter to have sex with her husband so as not to shame the family.

Al-Hikmi took his young bride to a nearby medical clinic, asking a doctor there to administer her tranquilizers so she would not resist his advances. The clinic said it refused.

Al-Hikmi then obtained performance enhancing pills, according to the police interrogation, and that night completed the act while she screamed.

The next day, he returned to the same medical clinic carrying Assi because she could not walk.

“I told him not to go near her for at least ten days,” said Dr. Fathiya Haidar. She said Assi’s vaginal canal was ripped.

A forensic report obtained by the AP showed that Assi’s injuries were much more extensive, including extensive tearing around the vagina and rectum, suggesting that there might have been additional intercourse after the clinic visit.

Her mother said she visited Assi later that day, where she found her daughter fading in and out of consciousness.

“She whispered in my ear that he had tied her up and had sex with her violently,” she said. “I said to her husband, what have you done, you criminal?”

She said al-Hikmi told her that the young bride was just possessed by spirits and said he would take her to a folk healer to cast them out. Hours later, Assi was dead.

“She asked me to stay beside her,” her mother said.

The practice of marrying young girls is widespread in Yemen and has drawn the attention of international rights groups seeking to pressure the government to outlaw child marriages.

“Early marriage places girls at increased risk of dropping out of school, being exposed to violence, abuse and exploitation, and even losing their lives from pregnancy, childbirth and other complications,” said UNICEF’s regional director Sigrid Kaag, in a statement Wednesday condemning the death.

A February 2009 law set the minimum age for marriage at 17, but it was repealed and sent back to parliament’s constitutional committee for review after some lawmakers called it un-Islamic. The committee is expected to make a final decision on the legislation this month.

The issue of Yemen’s child brides received widespread attention three years ago when an 8-year-old girl boldly went by herself to a courtroom and demanded a judge dissolve her marriage to a man in his 30s. She eventually won a divorce.

In September, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labor to give birth, a local human rights organization said.

Last month I attended my annual training session that's required for maintaining my state prison security clearance. During the training session there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who explained each of their beliefs. -

I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say. The Imam gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video. When he was finished, a time was provided for questions and answers.

When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Imam and asked: "Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad (Holy war) against the infidels of the world. And that by killing an infidel, which is a command to all Muslims, they are assured of a place in heaven. If that's the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?"

There was no disagreement with my statements and without hesitation, he replied, "Nonbelievers!"

I responded, "So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill anyone who is not of your faith so they can go to Heaven. Is that correct?"

The _expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

He sheepishly replied, "Yes." I then stated, "Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine the Pope commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering Protestants to do the same in order to go to Heaven!"

The Imam was speechless. I continued, "I also have problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me!

Let me ask you a question. Would you rather have your Allah who tells you to kill me in order to go to Heaven or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to Heaven and He wants you to be with me?"

You could have heard a pin drop as the Imam hung his head in shame. Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the 'Diversification' training seminar were not happy with Rick's way of dealing with the Islamic Imam and exposing the truth about the Muslim's beliefs.

I think everyone in the US should be required to read this, but with the liberal justice system, liberal media, and the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized.

1. I used to read the books of Saudi publisher Daressalam at work in Saudi. My Saudi friends would say they are the best books to buy on Islam until that is that I started to point out things like that above hen they would say my books were forgeries. Go figure!

Fine idea except its a one way street. Open our borders and every one will come here and swamp us, bankrupting our benefit system. Corrupting our culture. and generally lowering our standards. Having been to some of the places that would dump their unwanted on us I don’t think there will be a rush of westerners wanting to go to the shit pits of the world. Net result we suffer.

This is not a racist rant it is simple common sense. This is a small island. What we have here was paid for with the blood of our soldiers on many occasions. It didn’t just get given to us. It was earned. It is unfair that anyone should be able to just step off a plane and expect to take from us what we and our fore fathers bled for and paid taxes for, for centuries. Our lives as we have them now were not cheap.

I am not saying foreign nationals are not entitled to a better life but they could try fighting for it at home instead of coming here and overloading our system. When our society collapses they will all bugger of home and leave us to the wolves.

Fawziya Abdullah Youssef died of severe bleeding on Friday while giving birth to a stillborn in the al-Zahra district hospital of Hodeida province, 140 miles (223 kilometers) west of the capital San'a.

Child marriages are widespread in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, where tribal customs dominate society. More than a quarter of the country's females marry before age 15, according to a recent report by the Social Affairs Ministry.

Youssef was only 11 when her father married her to a 24-year-old man who works as a farmer in Saudi Arabia, said Ahmed al-Quraishi, chairman of Siyaj human rights organization, which promotes the rights of children in Yemen.

Al-Quraishi said that he stumbled upon Youssef in the hospital while investigating cases of children who had fled from the fighting in the north.

"This is one of many cases that exist in Yemen," said al-Quraishi. "The reason behind it is the lack of education and awareness, forcing many girls into marriage in this very early age.

"Impoverished parents in Yemen sometimes give away their young daughters in return for hefty dowries. There is also a long-standing tribal custom in which infant daughters and sons are promised to cousins in hopes it will protect them from illicit relationships, he said.

Al-Quraishi said there are no statistics to show how many marriages involving children are performed every year.

The issue of child brides vaulted into the headlines here two years ago when an 8-year-old Yemeni girl went by herself to a courtroom and demanded a judge dissolve her marriage to a man in his 30s. She eventually won a divorce, and legislators began looking at ways to curb the practice.

US father guilty of prayer death.

Man found guilty over death of his daughter for praying rather than seeking medical help.

A man accused of killing his 11-year-old diabetic daughter by praying instead of seeking medical care has been found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide.

Dale Neumann, 47, was convicted over the March 23, 2008, death of his daughter, Madeline, from undiagnosed diabetes.

Prosecutors argued he should have rushed the girl to a hospital because she could not walk, talk, eat or drink.

Instead, Madeline died on the floor of the family's rural home as people surrounded her and prayed. Someone called an ambulance when she stopped breathing.

Neumann, who once studied to be a Pentecostal minister, testified that he believed God would heal his daughter and he never expected her to die. God promises in the Bible to heal, he said.

"If I go to the doctor, I am putting the doctor before God," Neumann testified. "I am not believing what he said he would do."

Excuse me but . . . . did it never occur to this joker that if God made everything then he made doctors. Going to the doctor is not putting the doctor before God but simply using one of his tools.

Winning is all

A small schoolboy at the sports day breaks the winning line with his egg still on his spoon. Overjoyed at his prowess as racing balancer of eggs he raises his arms in the air pronouncing for all present that he is the WINNER!

A teacher witnessing this takes the lad to one side and totally destroys his moment. "There are no winners its just a bit of fun", she says.

This does not make the slowcoach at the back feel any less last. Everyone knows he/she was last. All that has been achieved is one 5 year old's moment of glory has been dashed by some teacher with her PC head up her arse.

Its no wonder that our children are failing if we are teaching them that winning is not important.

Winning is the most important thing we have. It means that someone was the first to discover penicillin, it means that some one was first to discover X-rays, it means that someone was the first to find a cure for a cancer; it means that someone was first to invent anesthetic . . . . need I go on.

Winning is important to me. Had someone not had the enthusiasm to say we can do this and discovered inert optical plastics I would be blind.

We don't speak German because we won the war. We will loose the peace if we don't win anymore.

Women flogged for wearing trousers

Police in Sudan have arrested 13 women in a raid on a cafe and flogged 10 of them in public for wearing trousers in violation of the country's strict Islamic law, one of those arrested has said.

The 13 women were at a cafe in the capital, Khartoum, when they were detained on Friday by officers from the public order police, which enforces the implementation of Sharia law in public places.

One of those arrested on Friday, journalist Lubna Hussein, said she is challenging the charges, which can be punishable by up to 40 lashes.

"I didn't do anything wrong," said Ms Hussein.

Islamic Sharia law has been strictly implemented in Sudan since the ruling party came to power in a 1989 military coup.

The force randomly enforces an alcohol ban and often scolds young men and women mingling in public. Public order cases usually involve quick summary trials with sentences carried out shortly afterward, as was the case with 10 of the women arrested on Friday. They were flogged and fined 250 Sudanese pounds (£74).

Ms Hussein and two other women chose to go to trial. On Monday she was summoned for questioning and now awaits a decision from the prosecutor on when the case could go to trial.

Women in northern Sudan, particularly in Khartoum, dress in traditional outfits that include a shawl over their head and shoulder. Western dress is uncommon.

Ms Hussein said she decided to speak out because flogging is a practice many women endure in silence. She even sent printed invitations to the press and public figures to attend her expected trial.

"Let the people see for themselves. It is not only my issue," she said. "This is retribution to thousands of girls who are facing flogging for the last 20 years because of wearing trousers. They prefer to remain silent."

Few countries contrast the twenty-first century with the values of antiquity as Saudi Arabia does. A wealthy, modern state would seem to have a few progressive ideas. Not so with the Saudis.

A Saudi judge has ruled that it is okay for husbands to slap their wives if they spend too much.

That wasn’t all Judge Hamid Al-Razine had to say. He noted, “women’s indecent behavior and use of offensive words against their husbands were some of the reasons for domestic violence in the country.”

Domestic violence is on the rise in Saudi Arabia in recent years. Of course, the woman is to blame.

It would be unthinkable to consider otherwise in a society that does not allow women to drive or men and women to mix in public. Yet, the same society allows a 47-year-old man to marry an 8-year-old girl.

All this is done in the pretext of protecting women or upholding morality. Is there really that much difference between the Saudis and the Taliban? Both cherish oppressive ideologies and suppress women.

Why, yes, there is a difference. The Saudis sell us their oil.

Americans die in Afghanistan with one of the pretenses being the liberation of women from a repressive ideology. In Saudi Arabia, they work with the Saudis to provide the world with oil. For that, the Saudis always get a free ride, unless you are a Saudi woman.

Mosque inquiry will cost taxpayers £100k

Taxpayers will pick up a £100,000 bill for the planning inquiry which resurrected plans for a Black Country mosque, it has been revealed.

The cost of the four-day hearing will be met by Dudley Council after the Government’s planning inspectorate overturned its decision to reject the £18 million proposal.

The authority was forced to hire security staff to police the summit at the inspector’s request - but will not receive a penny from Whitehall to cover costs.

The decision to allow the appeal for the project in Hall Street, Dudley, was this week announced after the public inquiry in June.

Dudley Council boss David Caunt described the decision as a “sad day” for local democracy saying it ignored the 22,000 people who signed a petition in opposition.

And Councillor Caunt said that the £100,000 bill rubbed salt in the wound.

OIC to move UNGA against caricatures

ISLAMABAD: A resolution against the publication of blasphemous caricatures of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) in various countries will be presented in the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), an Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) representative said on Tuesday.

“The resolution will demand legislation against the publication of blasphemous caricatures of revered personalities and derogatory remarks against religions. Then some CSU men came out and told me that they were forcing Wijikala to have sex with them and threatened to rape me as well. One of the men tried to strip my clothes. When they saw that my son was asleep on my lap, a Policeman dragged him away into one of the buildings in the CSU compound as I begged them not to hurt him. Two men then pinned me down on the van's floor while another stripped me and raped me. I was screaming and pleading when a Policeman put his foot on my mouth to stifle me. Inside the building they forced Wijikala, who was standing naked, to strip my underwear. I was hung upside down in a knot from a pole placed between two tables, with my hands and feet tied. Then the men in the room poked our genitals and tortured us until dawn", said Sivamani Sinnathamby Weerakon, the young mother of three who was arrested by the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) of the Police in Mannar on 13 March. Wijikala Nanthan, 22, of Alavetty in Jaffna who was arrested with Sivamani, is pregnant.

The two women were produced before the Mannar district judge M.H.M Ajmeer by the CSU at his residence and were remanded in judicial custody for fourteen days. The judge instructed the Mannar prisons officer to have the women examined by a medical officer forthwith. Wijikala, according to her relatives, is pregnant and was raped repeatedly by Policemen in CSU custody.

The Mannar Bishop and human rights activists said Wednesday that the CSU has often been in the habit of arresting women such as Sivamani and Wijikala from various parts of the Mannar district to rape and exploit brutally under the pretext of interrogation and extended detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Emergency Regulations.

Sivamani said that more than ten uniformed persons surrounded the Aasika lodge in Uppukkulam, a suburb of Mannar town, on 13 March around 11 p.m. Sivamani was staying in the lodge with her son as her husband had gone to Vavuniya to find work. Wijikala and her husband, Shanmugam Nanthan, were staying in the room next to hers.

The men from the CSU entered the lodge and checked the men and women separately. They separated Sivamani and accused her of being a member of the Liberation Tigers. Sivamani denied their charges and showed them her family album to prove that she was a person with children and a family. She told the CSU personnel that she was staying in the lodge with her son. They had then dragged her son from bed to the main hall of the lodge where they were questioning the inmates. The boy was taken to a corner of the hall and questioned by the CSU men. Sivamani said she could see that the boy was too sleepy to answer any of their questions and threats.

"However, they came back and threatened me, claiming that my son had confessed that I was a trained member of the Liberation Tigers. I cried and pleaded with them that it was obvious that my son was too sleepy and could not tell them anything. But they insisted that I was a Tiger. Then they got Wijikala search my person and me to check her".

"Then we, Nanthan, Wijikala, my son and I, were taken in a white van to a place in the town, which I recognised the next day as the compound in which the Mannar CSU office is located. There, Nanthan and his wife Wijikala were pulled out of the van and were dragged into a building in the compound. After a while I heard Wijikala screaming and pleading. Some Policemen who from the building, told me in lurid detail about how they were forcing sex on Wijikala and threatened that they would do the same to me. They me told me that the OIC wants to see me. But I begged them not to harm my little son".

Sivamani was then raped in the van while her six-year-old son was dragged away into the CSU office. She was thereafter taken to the CSU's Officer in Charge (OIC) Suraweera. Sivamani saw Wijikala standing stark naked in the room surrounded by more than five CSU men.

"The OIC, a tall fair man with a beard, ordered me to strip naked when I was made to stand before him with most of my dress torn and stripped. I was whipped with thick wires when I refused to remove my clothes. The pain was so unbearable that I was compelled to take off my skirt and blouse. But the CSU men insisted that I should remove my under wear as well. I refused. Thereupon a man poked a stick into my underwear and tried to tear them. Then they forced Wijikala to remove my undergarments and pushed me to the brightly lit part of the room close to the OIC".

Sivamani said that Inspector of Police (IP) Suraweera, the OIC, had lasciviously scrutinised her private parts when she was pushed near him by the other Policemen in the room.

She was then tied up and hung upside down in a crouching position on a pole placed between two tables in the room and tortured until dawn, 14 March. The torture was so severe that Sivamani and Wijikala had agreed to say that they were military trained members of the Liberation Tigers who had brought bombs to Mannar from the Vanni.

Three days later they were ordered, while in the custody of the CSU, to sign confessions typed in Sinhala to the effect that they were members of the LTTE, had come to Mannar with bombs etc,

Sivamani said she was from the village of Ramanathapuram in Kilinochchi . She was married to a Sinhalese fifteen years ago when she was fourteen. She has three children. Her husband, Ranbanda Weerakon Banda of Matale, left Kilinochchi in 1994 to find work in Vavuniya. Sivamani heard in 1999 that he had married another woman there. She had come to Vavuniya and met her husband in November 2000. Ranbanda had then put her up in a house in, Nelukkulam, a suburb of the northern border town.

A few days later he had brought his mistress to the same house. Earlier this month Sivamani decided to leave the house as she could no longer stand the squabbles with her husband's mistress. She had therefore set out to Mannar so that she could go back to the Vanni. Her husband had, however, gone along with her and put her up at the Aasika lodge and returned to Vavuniya. Despite being informed by the ICRC about her wife's situation, Ranbanda has not come to Mannar so far to see Sivamani, sources said.

Sivamani said that CSU personnel have threatened both her and Wijikala not to give evidence against them if there is a case in courts.

The adoption of some aspects of Islamic sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable", the Archbishop of Canterbury has said.

Dr Rowan Williams said there was a place for finding a "constructive accommodation" in areas such as marriage - allowing Muslim women to avoid western divorce proceedings.

Other religions enjoyed such tolerance of their own laws, he pointed out, but stressed that it could never be allowed to take precedence over an individual's rights as a citizen.

He said it would also require a change in perception of what sharia involved beyond the "inhumanity" of extreme punishments and attitudes to women seen in some Islamic states.

Dr Williams told BBC Radio 4's The World At One: "It seems unavoidable and, as a matter of fact, certain conditions of sharia are already recognised in our society and under our law, so it is not as if we are bringing in an alien and rival system.

"We already have in this country a number of situations in which the internal law of religious communities is recognised by the law of the land as justifying conscientious objections in certain circumstances."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman insisted that British law would be based on British values, and Sharia law would be no justification for acting against national law. But he also said concessions could be made in specific instances, such as a relaxation of the law on stamp duty to avoid it being paid twice when Sharia-compliant mortgages were used by Muslims.

Mr Brown's spokesman said: "In relation to Sharia law, there are instances where the Government has made changes - for example, we have changed the regulation around stamp duty to include Sharia-compliant mortgages." They involve two transfers of property, so in theory stamp duty would be payable twice - but is in fact paid only once.

The spokesman went on: "Our general position is that Sharia law cannot be used as a justification for committing breaches of English law, nor should the principles of Sharia law be included in a civil court for resolving contractual disputes.

"If there are specific instances like stamp duty, where changes can be made in a way that's consistent with British law and British values, in a way to accommodate the values of fundamental Muslims, that is something the Government would look at. There is always going to be a debate about this issue."

n 1978-9 I was living and studying in Denmark. But in 1978 - even in Copenhagen, one didn't see Muslim immigrants. The Danish population embraced visitors, celebrated the exotic, went out of its way to protect each of its citizens. It was proud of its new brand of socialist liberalism - one in development since the conservatives had lost power in 1929 - a system where no worker had to struggle to survive, where one ultimately could count upon the state as in, perhaps, no other Western nation at the time. The rest of Europe saw the Scandinavians as freethinking, progressive and infinitely generous in their welfare policies. Denmark boasted low crime rates, devotion to the environment, a superior educational system and a history of humanitarianism. Denmark was also most generous in its immigration policies - it offered the best welcome in Europe to the new immigrant: generous welfare payments from first arrival plus additional perks in transportation, housing and education.

It was determined to set a world example for inclusiveness and multiculturalism. How could it have predicted that one day in 2005 a series of political cartoons in a newspaper would spark violence that would leave dozens dead in the streets - all because its commitment to multiculturalism would come back to bite?

By the 1990s the growing urban Muslim population was obvious - and its unwillingness to integrate into Danish society was obvious. Years of immigrants had settled into Muslim-exclusive enclaves. As the Muslim leadership became more vocal about what they considered the decadence of Denmark's liberal way of life, the Danes - once so welcoming - began to feel slighted. Many Danes had begun to see Islam as incompatible with their long-standing values: belief in personal liberty and free speech, in equality for women, in tolerance for other ethnic groups, and a deep pride in Danish heritage and history.

European countries and the U.S.: some Muslims in Denmark who opted to leave the Muslim faith have been murdered in the name of Islam, while others hide in fear for their lives. I think of my Danish, friend Elsa - who as a teenager had dreaded crossing the street to the bakery every morning under the eyes of occupying Nazi soldiers - and I wonder what she would say today.

In 2001, Denmark elected the most conservative government in some 70 years -one that had some decidedly non-generous ideas about liberal unfettered immigration.

Today Denmark has the strictest immigration policies in Europe. Denmark's effort to protect itself has been met with accusations of "racism" by liberal media across Europe! - even as other governments struggle to right the social problems wrought by years of too-lax immigration. If you wish to become Danish, you must attend three years of language classes. You must pass a test on Denmark's history, culture, and a Danish language test.

You must live in Denmark for 7 years before applying for citizenship. You must demonstrate an intent to work, and have a job waiting. If you wish to bring a spouse into Denmark, you must both be over 24 years of age, and you won't find it so easy anymore to move your friends and family to Denmark with you.

You will not be allowed to build a mosque in Copenhagen. Although your children have a choice of some 30 Arabic culture and language schools in Denmark, they will be strongly encouraged to assimilate to Danish society in ways that past immigrants weren't.

In 2006, the Danish minister for employment, Claus Hjort Frederiksen, spoke publicly of the burden of Muslim immigrants on the Danish welfare system, and it was horrifying: the government's welfare committee had calculated that if immigration from Third World countries were blocked, 75 percent of the cuts needed to sustain the huge welfare system in coming decades would be unnecessary. In other words, the welfare system as it existed was being exploited by immigrants to the point of eventually bankrupting the government. "We are simply forced to adopt a new policy on immigration.

The calculations of the welfare committee are terrifying and show how unsuccessful the integration of immigrants has been up to now," he said.

A large thorn in the side of Denmark's imams is the Minister of Immigration and Integration, Rikke Hvilshoj. She makes no bones about the new policy toward immigration, "The number of foreigners coming to the country makes a difference," Hvilshoj says, "There is an inverse correlation between ho! w many come here and how well we can receive the foreigners that come."

And on Muslim immigrants needing to demonstrate a willingness to blend in, "In my view, Denmark should be a country with room for different cultures and religions. Some values, however, are more important than others. We refuse to question democracy, equal rights, and freedom of speech."

Hvilshoj has paid a price for her show of backbone. Perhaps to test her resolve, the leading radical imam in Denmark, Ahmed Abdel Rahman Abu Laban, demanded that the government pay blood money to the family of a Muslim who was murdered in a suburb of Copenhagen, stating that the family's thirst for revenge could be thwarted for money. When Hvilshoj dismissed his demand, he argued that in Muslim culture the payment of retribution money was common, to which Hvilshoj replied that what is done in a Muslim country is not necessarily what is done in Denmark.

The Muslim reply came soon after: The religion of peace, eh? Her house was torched while she, her husband and children slept. All managed to escape unharmed, but she and her family were moved to a secret location and she and other ministers were assigned bodyguards for the first time - in a country where such murderous violence was once so scarce.

Her government has slid to the right, and her borders have tightened. Many believe that what happens in the next decade will determine whether Denmark survives as a bastion of good living, humane thinking and social responsibility, or whether it becomes a nation at civil war with supporters of Sharia law. And meanwhile, Americans clamor for stricter immigration policies, and demand an end to state welfare programs that allow many immigrants to live on the public dole. As we in America look at the enclaves of Muslims amongst us, and see those who enter our shores too easily, dare live on our taxes, yet refuse to embrace our culture, respect our traditions, participate in our legal system, obey our laws, speak our language, appreciate our history... we would do well to look to Denmark, and say a prayer for her future and for our own. Gillian Gibbons will be deported after serving her sentence.
British teacher Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, has been sentenced to 15 days in prison in Sudan after she allowed her pupils to call a teddy bear Muhammad.

Saudi police 'stopped' fire rescue

Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress, according to Saudi newspapers.

In a rare criticism of the kingdom's powerful "mutaween" police, the Saudi media has accused them of hindering attempts to save 15 girls who died in the fire on Monday. About 800 pupils were inside the school in the holy city of Mecca when the tragedy occurred.

According to the al-Eqtisadiah daily, firemen confronted police after they tried to keep the girls inside because they were not wearing the headscarves and abayas (black robes) required by the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islam.

One witness said he saw three policemen "beating young girls to prevent them from leaving the school because they were not wearing the abaya".

The Saudi Gazette quoted witnesses as saying that the police - known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice - had stopped men who tried to help the girls and warned "it is a sinful to approach them".

The father of one of the dead girls said that the school watchman even refused to open the gates to let the girls out.

"Lives could have been saved had they not been stopped by members of the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice," the newspaper concluded.

Relatives' anger
Families of the victims have been incensed over the deaths.

Most of the victims were crushed in a stampede as they tried to flee the blaze.

The school was locked at the time of the fire - a usual practice to ensure full segregation of the sexes.

The religious police are widely feared in Saudi Arabia. They roam the streets enforcing dress codes and sex segregation, and ensuring prayers are performed on time.

Those who refuse to obey their orders are often beaten and sometimes put in jail.

Well simply it is supposed to be haram (bad) to make an image of the good old prophet Mohammed or any religious dignitaries. This would this would be very commendable if it wasn't so damned laughable. Visit almost any mosque and you will notice that it is named after the leader. How is this any less idolatrous than pictures of long deceased religious leaders.

We in the west enjoy certain rights and freedoms. These freedoms must be protected. They were long fought for and blood was spilled. If others don’t like the rights and freedoms we enjoy then they should be allowed to vote with their feet. No one is keeping them here. No one is twisting their arm. In fact the rights and freedoms we enjoy they can use to leave us if the cannot tolerate the society we have built.

Personally I think ALL religion is a load of bollocks be it Jews, Catholics, Anglicans, Islam, Buddhists or whoever, even Jehova's Witnesses. Religion is about controlling the little people. We are spending £100 million ever year on translating official forms and literature into something like 70 different languages. Well you might ask why we have to help those who don’t understand English and I would tend to agree, but when some one has been drawing benefit for 10 years and still doesn't speak English then you have ask are they taking the piss.

I had reason to take my company to court in a foreign country. My lawyer not only didn't speak to me after the initial interview, he never gave me one piece of official paper in English. When I insisted he told me to, 'go to a translator' at my cost on top of his SR 25,000 fee.

My question is why should we, give people consideration in our country that they deny us in theirs, and more to the point, if they must have the facility, why don’t they pay for it. It is not our fault they can't speak English other than we encourage them not to learn by making it easy for them to live here in lingual oblivion.

So a mere teaching assistant took a Church of England school to court because they wouldn't let allow her to wear her veil in class. This assistant was assisting in teaching English! A Moslem taxi driver, Abdul Rasheed Majekodunmi, refused to take a blind woman and her dog in his cab because in Islam they are not allowed to contact with such animals. Given that he broke the law, in that he was discriminating against a disabled person, why has he still got a licence?

Jane Vernon complained to his bosses and the owner, Niven Sinclair, refused to listen. He said, "It wasn't very important", and that she should, "have more respect for other people's culture". I would have come back with Islam is not very important either. It's place in the modern world is flawed and unnecessary.

Common sense prevailed and he was fined £200 and ordered to pay £1,200 for failing to comply with the disability act. Yet even after that he was defiant. He stated that he would continue to refuse to carry dogs in his cab. Sounds to me like someone who wants to be an EX taxi driver.

Our law comes before any culture, if Moslems don't like that then I suggest that they may take advantage of our freedom of choice and go to a country that allows such behaviour. We don't want to change our ways, we like England the way it is. If Moslems don't like what we have to offer, why come here in the first place. We have freedoms here that don't exist in Islamic countries. It is such a shame that they come here to escape inhumane regimes and bring all the crap with them.

I can't say I have ever particularly liked Jack Straw. Mainly because he said once that Christians and Moslems can work together. On that I feel he is wrong.

However, his comments on the wearing of hijab veil or burqa are right on the mark. Short of insulting Moslem women it is he who was insulted when a woman in a veil said "It's nice to meet you face to face". It might have been for her but he could not see her face. The constant bleating that 'it is our culture' does not hold water. It is our country and it is not our culture. There is no where in the Qur'an that says women should cover up.

I have lived in the Middle East for most of the last 6 years and although it is not normal for westerners to come into much contact with Arab women it does happen. At the doctors or dentist etc it is the norm for the receptionist to be an Arab lady. Now most people would have no problem understanding the clipped English that these women use, but if you are hard of hearing as I am it is a problem. I need to see and hear what someone is saying. If I can't see the lips then half of my communication reception has gone and understanding is limited.

There is an easy answer to this, I could just ask for a westerner to speak to which would be OK in the Middle East, but not here. Such a request would be met with officious asshoes telling me I am being racist, which is not the case. Far from it, in fact were I a racist I don't think I would have spent so much time living and working in other countries.

I have said before I don't give a shit about the colour of a man's skin, what I care about is his nature, is he a nice guy? Does he mean me any harm? It is sad today that the latter is probably the most important thing when meeting someone new. It cannot be argued that the majority of people who want to hurt me are of Arab/Pakistani appearance. That is not racist, it's a fact of life.

The so called peaceful religion is no more peaceful than water isn't wet. Argue though they may Islam is a problem. It is the express intent of Islam to make the whole world an Islamic State. There will be no elections, it will come to pass. Islam already decides what I can do and say in my own country. Just writing this is a no-no and could have me following in the footsteps of Salmon Rushdie. All I am doing here is voicing my opinion, it is my right, yet there are those that would snuff out my life in an instant for doing so.

In Islamic teaching everyone is a Moslem, it's just that some of us have yet to realise it. This is born out by the fact that a religion that only came into existence 1427 years ago claim that Adam (of Adam & Eve fame [probably 10,000 years ago]) was the first Moslem.

I am not a particularly religious person (I lapsed some years ago), but I resent these new boys on the block stealing a history that was not theirs to steal. We are continuously being told that we must respect other peoples religion but where is it in the rule book that we must respect a thief.

We are often told that we are a multi-cultural country. I would ask when did that happen? When did we cast a vote for this?

This is our country, we have our laws, and we have our customs. As such our laws and customs MUST take precedence over the laws and customs of visitors to this country. Unless this is so there will be bloodshed on the streets of England. It will be a sad day when it happens, but I feel sure it will.

When a senior politician voices an opinion we should listen because like it or not he may be right. Failure to do so will result in every woman wearing a veil and every English man bowing down to pray to some force of evil the like of which most of us cannot imagine.

Call me a scare monger if you like, it's your choice, but be sure when this comes to pass you acknowledge that you read it here first.

Someone is stealing something from me; there is nothing I can do to stop them. I watch the news and see Islamist protesting the words of the pope. I cannot protest against their protest. Why? Because it would be racist and because I would offend a minority group. The fact that they are racist towards me and that they offend me is not a point to argue. I am white so I am racist. They are Moslems so they can't be. I have a hard time dealing with that.

I have travelled far and wide and one thing I do know is that colour is important the blacker you are the lower down the social scale you are. I once witnessed an Indian woman refuse to sit next to a Pakistani woman on an aeroplane because she was a "Paki". One Arab on the same flight from Paris to Oman called the flight attendant a "fucking useless bitch", simply because she woke him up to tell him to put on his seat belt. The aircraft was taxying to the runway. Later in the flight I noticed his briefcase was full of pills not just for self use but I mean full. Obviously a dealer taking the profits. Another Arab complained that they didn't have milk on board for the baby despite being told at the airport that he should ensure that he had milk as the galley didn't have enough on board. He still complained

The Committee for Racial Equality (CRE) has an annual award for blacks in the media. Clearly this is a racist event where only blacks are honoured. If they had a similar event for whites this would redress the balance, but they don't, and I am supposed to be racist. The CRE are cleaning up their act, but it is still an organisation that deals with White on Black racism and not Black on White racism. This is against their remit, yet they are allowed to get away with it.

Personally I don't give a shit what colour a mans skin is, I am more concerned with what sort of person he is. Let us understand this, Islam is about taking over the world. It sees every single one of us as a Moslem that hasn't yet understood. The Islamic Republic of UK is becoming a reality. No not scaremongering it is a fact. There are many in the UK that are working towards it. Our Government will not stop it unless we tell them to.

Jeddah, Asharq Al-Awsat- An investigation into the death of nine-year-old Saudi girl Ghosoon revealed that she died as a result of torture suffered at the hands of her father during the one year she remained under his custody. Ghosoon's father divorced her mother whilst she was pregnant with Ghosoon, and the child remained with her mother for nine years until Ghosoon's father won custody over her.

Sources informed Asharq Al-Awsat that forensic reports had shown that the child had been tortured as her body was covered with burnt scars and bruises as well as marks indicating the use of handcuffs. Ghosoon's father, who left school at an early age, did not allow her to attend school claiming that she was "mentally unstable," whilst the school's administration argued that Ghosoon had excelled at school.

Sources further highlighted that Ghosoon's father admitted to tormenting his daughter with the help of his second wife who is presently being held at the women's prison in Mecca. Ghosoon's 32 year-old father has been detained at Al-Mansour police station in Mecca.

Saddique one of the men arrested over the airport security issue a couple of weeks ago says he will remember the nightmare of his time in detention for the rest of his life.

Well bully for him. He can do that because he can choose to and has a life. Those innocent people who would have been killed had the plot not been foiled would never have had a choice and their lives would have bee cut short. He may not have been involved but he and his family are safer because the security services were able to pick up all those they had a inkling were suspects. Had he been picked up in Pakistan I doubt he would have had such an 'easy' ride and would probably have been found guilty even though he is innocent.

There are cities here that I am not allowed to visit because I am not of the faith, yet anyone can visit our Cathedrals . I cannot walk down the street holding hands with my girlfriend because its against the law. Even kissing in public, a peck on the cheek in greeting, will get us deported and her passport stamped 'PROSTITUTE'.

I am segregated when I go out for a meal into a men only section, It says 'singles' but it means you ain't good enough to sit with the women and children, there are never any females in there. It seems to me that multi-culturalism is a one way street.

Yes people want to come to the west for a better life, but they bring with them all the crap that they are running away from then expect us to take it on board. We have to accept all cultures but it is not incumbent on our 'guests' to do likewise.

The greatest gift that we can give any one who comes to us is FREEDOM! Yet they would take it away from us in a heartbeat. Our freedom to be who we are. Our freedom to think for ourselves. Our freedom to live our lives as we choose. Many Muslims would have us be The Islamic Republic of United Kingdom, and there are those that are actively seeking that. I don't want to live in an Islamic state so I live, albeit temporarily in an Islamic State here, in the UK. I cannot understand why someone who does want an Islamic State comes to Britain unless it is for the sinister reasons.

Our country is changing and we have no control over how it changes. People would look down on me because I voice my fears, yet they would bend over back wards to ensure that immigrants get a better deal than I do. We have people out of work yet still the rising tide of immigration crashes on our shores.

The UK is a tiny island we really don't have the space to continue accepting all comers, we just don't have the space!

An influx of immigrants means an endless pool of unskilled workers, that's good for business because that keeps wages down. But it also means more people needing housing, schooling, medicare etc etc etc and this government is just not geared up for that. More and more people coming in and less and less in the budget.

An Asian or Filipino etc coming to UK does not put in as much as your average Brit. Yes he will pay the same tax on his income but that is where it ends. A Brit will use almost all his money in country, where as an Asian or Filipino etc will send quite a lot of it home. UK plc does not get any tax from money spent abroad by an out of country family. So an immigrant is not worth as much to UK as a full time Brit.

It's hard enough for our children to compete with the children in their class but even harder to compete with people who haven't even arrived yet.

Excuse me but ..... It is just not fair on us to expect us to take second place all the time!!!!!!!!

The answer Nothing has changed in this regard in the new law. Employers are required to pay for the following expenses: airfare, including annual leave airfare, medical treatment, and visa and iqama costs. Employees may forfeit any of these rights if they choose, but that must be outlined in a contract. Otherwise the law stands.

Excuse me but........ Back in June I said "just because the police didn't find anything (when they searched the home of two mulsims in East London) it doesn't mean they are not guilty.

Well well well so it would appear that one of those two 'good' muslim boys (who are infact men) are now being investigated in relation to a child pornography ring. Police found CP images on a computer at the house. No surprises there then, certainly not for me any way.

Why I dont knowbut I can think of 2 good reasons why not.

1. Turkey is not in Europe except for a tiny part of it in the north-west

2. The last thing the EU needs is another 70 million Moslems. We have enough!

Shouldn't Turks align themselves with the Arab nations? My thoughts are YES!

They are more ethnically compatable with Arabs. The only real borders they have are with Arabs. And they worship an Arab God.

What is the point of joining the EU unless it is to infiltrate europe and bring their religion with them.

I for one don't want more Moslems in europe. We have enough as it is.

I live in Israel, a state in the middle east. My state hasn't seen a lot of serenity moments. I rarely watch the TV without hearing about violence. Violence-that's the name of the game here in the Middle East. I can't remember if I passed one peacefull year....... no there is none.

The experts says that the people in Israel are more nervous and worried than in other places in the world. When you see terror attacks constantly, when you hear smell and feel the news every day almost hour after hour that means you are nervous.That means you are uncertain, unsure, about the future and what's coming ahead.

Something about three weeks ago, my country was attacked by hostile terror organization. Hezbollah- the God party as is literaly says. how can such a group represent God? Is it God way to kill and destroy everything in your way in order to achieve your goals? I don't know, maybe it is. If so many people in the middle east and around the world are adopting this way maybe there is something here that I haven't revealed yet.

Fatal mistake

Now there is war, a war between the war mongers and Israel. People die in wars, it's a conventional routine. The Hizbolla thought that Israel would continue with it's restraint policy towards them and their stings from time to time in the border.Why did he think so? Because Israel was on a new path and the government wanted to put all it's efforts into solving the Gaza strip issue. Because it was a relatively calm period of time and the Israeli economy started to show green lights.

Nasralla did a fatal mistake, he thought Israel will respond reservedly once again, he didn't estimate the new leadership and he should have, he should have thought about the new leader would like to prove himself worthy.

He also thought that the people will refuse to enter a war, he knows that the israeli people doesn't want victims, he doesn't care about his people life, and they doesn't care either. The fundamentalistic way of the shiite believer is blind. Dying is the highest level of spirituality but he was wrong all along. The Israeli people have suffered constantly from the Lebanese missle threat, especially those who live close to the northern border.

The people want to remove this threat, permanently and live in peace and quiet. Now because of the radicalism of one group who decided it can attack without being punished the Lebanese people suffer, the Israeli people suffer, everyone suffers. The Lebanese have just kicked Syria out, they could start over and establish a democracy, but the Hizbolla has ruined everything.

The strategic point

Hizbollah is financed by Iran. This radical country supports and encourages the Hizbollah and other terror groups. Iran wants to be a major factor in the region, they resist the western world and want to influence the region and spread their belief. They help Syria and Hizbolla in the struggle againts Israel.

From the other side, there is the United States of America which wants to establish democracies in the world and in this case this war is serving their interests. The American way says that democracies bring stability. Meanwhile they tried to do it in Afganistan, and aslo in Iraq and the people seem to refuse to accept this ideology.Iran wants a status others have but she hasn't. The threat of a nuclear bomb. That seem frightening for a second, considering the last declarations of ahmadinajad who called to wipe Israel of the map.

Israel won't allow Iran to reach such a point and hitting the Hizbolla means hitting the Iranians. The USA knows it, that's why Israel has got time to breath, time to leave accepted facts.

Middle East

So what is going on in the Middle East? I have no idea!

Just who is in charge in Lebanon? Hezbollah!

Why are the Lebanese Government (the president must be Maronite Christian, the prime minister must be Sunni Muslim, and the speaker of the parliament must be Shi'a Muslim) not doing something about this situation? Lebanon is a majority Shi'a country. The Hizbollah are Shi'a. There is no way on gods green earth that the country's Shi'a Army will go against Shi'a Hezbollah.

Why are the other governments around not doing anything? Self interest!

Syria are mostly Sunni. Iraq (65 percent Arab Shi'a, 15 percent Arab Sunni and 20 percent Kurdish. Iraqi Kurds are mostly Sunni, with about 10% being Shi'a Faili Kurds). and Iran (approximately 91 % are Shi'a and 8 % are Sunni) None there will stand against the Hezbollah.

Oman (Majority Ibadi and 25% Sunni) and Yemen (42% Shi'a 55% Sunni) are to small and to distant to help anyone.

Saudi Arabia are Sunnis (The Majority are Sunni Muslims (about 10%) are Shi'a Muslims) They wont stand up to the Hezbollah. Saudis don't like confrontation. Iraq is predominantly Shiite but Saddam and his boy were Sunnis. Because of the fact that Shiites out numbered the Sunnis, they ruled with an iron fist. Shi'a hate Sunnis almost as much as they hate Jews.

Saudi Arabia thinks because the "Two Holy Mosques" are on Saudi soil they are the governers of all Islam. I think this riles the others a bit because all Moslems have to make at least one trip in their life time to Mecca. Of course the Saudis make an awful lot of money out of this.

Jordan, also Sunni, could be the voice of reason in the region, but will likely stay out of it for fear of reprisals from whoever they side against.

Turkey are a different kettle of fish altogether (About 99% of the population is officially Muslim, the majority of whom are Sunni. The Shi'a population, including Alevis is estimated at between 20-25%). Turkey want in to Europe they will not get involved in the present war. They are not as hardline as other Middle East countries but you can bet if they get into Europe they will change and not for the better.

Hezbollah means Party of God they were formed in 1982 specifically to fight Israel who were, to be fair, occupying Lebanon at that time. In 2000 when the Israelsi moved they should have been demobilised. Hezbollah is regarded by the Iranian & Syrian governments as a legitimate resistance, a view common in the Arab and Muslim world.

The United States and Israel claim that Hezbollah receives financial and political assistance, as well as weapons and training, from Iran and Syria. Syria and Iran admit supporting Hezbollah, but deny supplying it with weapons.

I have no idea what is going to be the outcome of the present situation but when Israel has expended itself fighting in Lebanon it wouldn't surprise me if other Middle East countries take the opportunity to have a 'legitimate' war and seriously trounce the Jews.

Hezbollah are without doubt a fighting organiseation as can be deduced by their flag.

Taxpayers fund radical Muslim cleric's Turkey trip

British taxpayers paid for a Muslim cleric who has defended suicide bombers to attend a conference on Islam in Turkey, it has emerged.

The Government paid for Yusuf al-Qaradawi and his wife to fly from their home in Qatar to Istanbul for the two-day event, and for their accommodation in a five-star hotel. The 80-year-old cleric was the focus of furious protests in 2004 when he visited Britain as a guest of London mayor Ken Livingstone.

He is considered the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, a militant group with offshoots around the world which acts as the ideological engine room of Islamist extremism. Mr al-Qaradawi, who has also called for the execution of homosexuals and opposed equal rights for women, addressed the opening day of the £300,000 conference.

He has defended Palestinian suicide bombers who attack Israel as "a weapon which the weak resort to". He was invited to speak by a steering group that included Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the former head of the Muslim Council of Britain.

The Foreign Office confirmed that it had covered Mr Qaradawi's expenses as part of its support for the conference, which took place earlier this month. Frances Guy, the FCO civil servant in charge of the "Engaging with the Islamic World Group", met Mr Qaradawi at the conference.
Details emerged as leaked emails obtained by the journalist Martin Bright and included in a pamphlet published by the think tank Policy Exchange yesterday revealed unease in the Foreign Office about Britain's relations with extremists.

Critics say the Government's support for Mr Qaradawi flies in the face of Tony Blair's calls for an end to tolerance for so-called "preachers of hate". Two years ago Mr Blair told MPs: "Let me make it absolutely clear. We want nothing to do with people who support suicide bombers in Palestine, or elsewhere or support terrorism."

And last week, on the eve of the anniversary of the London tube bombings, he said: "If we want to defeat extremism, we have to defeat its ideas." Mr Qaradawi and his wife were among 180 Muslim leaders from Europe, Egypt and Saudi Arabia flown by the Foreign Office to Istanbul for a conference called "Muslims in Europe" held in the luxury Ceylan InterContinental Hotel. Mr Qaradawi is banned from the United States, and when he appeared in Britain his visit sparked protests from Jewish and gay groups.

A leaked FCO memo dated last July revealed how some diplomats are keen to promote links with Mr Qaradawi, describing him as "a highly respscted islamic scholar". A spokesman for the FCO defended the decision to pay for Mr Qaradawi to attend the conference: "It is our view that you have got to engage in discussion with individuals with whom you don't necessarily agree."

My home is a small village by the sea near Zamboanga in the Southern Philippines. The majority of the people in our village are Muslim but there is not the sharp distinction that you find in some parts of the Philippines. The next village down the shore from my own is predominantly Christian and the two villages interact very closely. People from each barangay shop in the market of the others village for items they can't find in their own and generally work very well together. There are Christian weddings held in our village hall when the church in the next village is not available and the church hall in the Christian village was the location for many Muslim weddings when our own village hall was being renovated. We all attend the "fiestas" at the other villages and there are many intermarriages between villages with Muslim girls and boys both being allowed to marry outside of their religion. I never knew that a Muslim woman was forbidden in Islam from marrying a non-Muslim until I left my homeland and that was only one of the many discoveries that I was to make about the reality of Islam.
Fishing provides the primary means of living for the people of my village and coconut farming is the next main occupation. Life is simple and while most of our people are poor, real poverty is rare. Most families have sufficient food to survive with no difficulty and you don't find children suffering from malnourishment. When all else fails and a family begins to slip into poverty due to some unexpected tragedy there is the timeworn tradition of the father, mother or eldest child picking up the burden by going abroad for employment to help support the family. In the case of my family it was the death of my father which brought us to the brink of starvation and as I at 16 was the eldest child, this is my story.

Once again the streets of a quiet English suburb ran with the blood of an innocent girl. Honour Killings are still in the world of many cultures a fact of life. Many girls across the world are brutally murdered every year and it doesn't matter which country they are in. People come to the west for a better life, they never get it. They simply bring with them all the crap that made their lives bad in their home country.

They think that they have a right to meter out the same illegal punishment for petty crimes that would have been handed down in their own country. Not by judges but by ignorant members of their family.
Two cousins will now spend 10 and 20 years behind bars for the brutal murder of ones sister Samaria Nazir. Not only did they stab her 18 times, strangle her and cut her throat 3 times. They did it in front of two children aged 2 & 4 so they would know that they would get the same treatment if they were to dishonour the family.

And what was her crime? She fell in love. The only dishonour in this case is the dishonour that they have brought upon the family for believing that they were above the law. If there is a god he is not a god that approves of this and I feel sure these two will rot in the fires of hell.

There are two things we need and need right now. A clear warning to those who come to the UK and break our laws. And the DEATH penalty for those that do this in the future.

You cannot treat people with this mentality with kid gloves. They need to be hit and hit hard. Forget about their civil rights, they forfeit those when they commit these brutal murders on our land.

PETALUMA, Calif. - It all started four years ago when Roger Dier bought a baby rat to feed his pet Indian python. But when he saw the furry little critter squeaking for its life, the lifelong animal lover said he didn't have the heart to let it become just another snake snack.
"I couldn't stand it," he told The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa. "I took the rat out of the cage and got to know it."

After that, Dier was hooked on the rodents, which he described as gentle, lovable and an endless source of entertainment. He later bought four more at the pet store — but didn't think to spay or neuter them.

Last week, animal control officers discovered more than 1,300 rats in Dier's small one-bedroom Petaluma home, after a neighbour complained about the foul smell. He was cited for misdemeanour animal cruelty.

Dier, 67, said depression, loneliness, denial and a recent bout of flu and bronchitis kept him from maintaining control of the fast-breeding population.
"I did not set out to do this," he told The Press Democrat. "I do acknowledge irresponsibility and there's a case for laziness, denial, incompetence and just plain foolishness."
But "it was not all my fault," he added. "It was this force of nature that overwhelmed me."

Dier moved to Petaluma in 1978, working at an assembly plant and as a stained glass maker. He now lives off a small inheritance from his mother.
By all appearances, Dier looks like an everyday retiree, donning jeans and an Hawaiian shirt on a warm afternoon and driving a new Toyota Tacoma.

But his house, located in a quiet middle-class neighbourhood, reeks of urine. The floor is covered with the chaff of feed mixed with rat droppings, and everything is gnawed on, including the Sheetrock walls, according to The Press Democrat.

When animal control officers arrived, they found some rats stacked six deep in cages so overcrowded that many had missing eyes and limbs.

Up to 250 pounds of food a week. Dier admitted that he felt some relief when they were confiscated, noting the "crushing burden" of trying to care for them. He was up to buying 250 pounds of rat food a week.

Meanwhile, Dier, who was allowed to keep his seven cats, said he was grieving the loss — and deaths — of his furry friends.

"That's a darn pity," Dier said. "It's unfair to the animals. I'm not saying I wasn't unfair letting them be born into existence, but they didn't deserve to die."

Former ITV newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald has been named Media Personality of the Year at the Race in the Media Awards.Despite Sir Trevor's win, the BBC took the bulk of awards at the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) awards at the Royal Opera House.

Lloyd's TBS to offer Islamic banking

Lloyd's TSB joins a small but growing list of UK banks offering Islamic financial services, stating on Wednesday that it now offers sharia compliant current accounts and mortgages throughout the country.

"From today, Britain's two million Muslims will have access to current accounts and mortgages which comply with Islamic law (sharia), in every one of the bank's 2,000 branches," the bank said in a statement.

Devout Muslims who invest along sharia guidelines will not purchase assets that pay interest, or that derive profits from alcohol, pork or gambling.

Lloyd's TSB said more Islamic financial products will be introduced later this year, including an Islamic student account.

The move coincides with increased investor interest in Islamic finance, which globally is estimated to have a market size of anywhere between $200 billion and $400 billion (109 and 218 billion pounds).

The current account Lloyd's TSB is offering will have no credit interest and no overdraft facility, but does provide a debit card and does not charge a fee or require a minimum balance.

Lloyd's TBS Islamic account holders will also be able to access their money via ATM machines, the internet or telephone.

Under the terms of the Islamic mortgage on offer the bank buys the home on behalf of the customer, contributing up to 90 percent of the purchase price. The customer pays the remaining percentage upfront and pays the outstanding sum over an agreed term, together with a rental payment.

Excuse me but . . . . . . Investing involves laying out cash for funding business etc and getting a profit on that outlay. According to the Qur'an that is 'usury' and against Islamic principles as taught by the Prophet Mohamed. If you didn't work for it, it is not good.

Here in Saudi the Stock market was opened up last year to all Saudis. Ordinary people were borrowing SR50/1oo,000 to invest on the market. People were making a killing. Doubling their money in little over a week. Westerners were not allowed (a little racist thing they have here). When then the market started to fail, they began to loose big time. Westerners were invited in with open arms. I am sure that the idea was, let the westerners in to help the market recover. Take out Saudi money and leave the westerners to flounder. Is that the kind of Islamic banking Lloyd's are offering.

Saudi mortgages are really great. A Saudi can go to the bank and get a loan to build a house. The repayments don't have start till the house is finished. You you have no idea how many unfinished houses there are in Riyadh. Bet Lloyd's don't go down that route.

SLA soldiers armed with bayonets and knives entered the house of a family of four and slaughtered 35-year-old father, 27-year-old mother, 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son Thursday midnight in Vankalai, 12 km southeast of Mannar.

Eyewitnesses in the area, Thomaspuri Ward No 10 in Vankalai, have told Mannar Additional Magistrate that they could identify the soldiers involved in the massacre. Villagers alleged the mother was raped before the massacre. Tension prevails in Vankalai. Religious leaders including the Bishop of Mannar, parliamentarians and civil society members in Mannar have rushed to site. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission officials have visited the massacre site.

Cut non-payers' water to a trickle, Lords say

LONDON (Reuters) - Householders who refuse to pay their water bills should have their supply reduced to a trickle until they settle up, a House of Lords committee said on Tuesday.
Water companies were owed 962 million pounds last year, a level of debt the Lords Science and Technology Committee said was "completely unacceptable".

The committee also criticised the government over its plans to build thousands of homes in the southeast, the driest region of the country, saying it should have consulted more widely over the impact on water usage.

Research by regional utility South East Water had found that around two-thirds of customers owing it money could afford their bills. By not paying they were adding 10 pounds to every other customer's bill.

Disconnection for non-payment of domestic bills was banned in 1999, but the committee, chaired by Lord Selborne, said an alternative penalty could be partial disconnection, as practised in Australia.

"We saw in Australia a tamper-proof device which allows only a limited flow into the house, enough for basic health and safety needs, and we thought this was a rather good idea," he told BBC radio.

"I don't see why we should have to pay the bill for people who can pay but refuse to do so.
Consumer Council for Water spokesman Andrew Marsh said disconnection had been banned to protect vulnerable customers and told the BBC the committee's suggestion would be a retrograde step.

"It's very difficult to distinguish between 'can't pays' and 'won't pays,'" he said.
"There's a risk that vulnerable customers could be pulled in accidentally into the 'won't pay' category.

Housing and Planning Minister Yvette Cooper said the government was not currently proposing to restrict supply for non-payment.

But she said consumers, as well as suppliers, regulators and planners had to take responsibility for water management.

Despite heavy rain in May, southeast England is facing its severest drought for a century, with many water companies enforcing restrictions on domestic water use.

On house-building, the Lords committee said the government had "failed to consider the water management implications of their house building plans at an early enough stage.

It said government should ensure that the water companies' plans factor in what would inevitably be a significant increase in demand.

Brown wants cap on public pay

LONDON (Reuters) - Chancellor Gordon Brown called on Monday for greater accountability in the public sector and said pay rises for its staff would be kept low for the next two years.

In a wide ranging speech to business leaders in London, Brown said Britain needs to keep making tough decisions on public sector pay and reforms if it is to cope with the challenges posed by globalisation.

"We must do more to encourage local and regional pay flexibility," said Brown, who is widely expected to succeed Prime Minister Tony Blair before the next election expected in 2009.

"With this year's public sector pay settlements averaging just 2.25 percent -- we are maintaining vigilance in the fight against inflation -- and next year and the year after that we will maintain this discipline of low overall settlements.

Brown also sought to soothe business fears that public sector reform would lose momentum under his premiership because unions might hold more sway with the 55-year-old Scot.
"We will continue to reform our public services: matching national objectives with other drivers of change -- competition and contestability and local choice and voice, including publicly available real time data," he said.

Students "executed" as Iraq violence rages on

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Gunmen in Iraq dragged 24 people, mostly teenage students, from vehicles and shot them dead, police said, as violence raged in the country on Sunday.

Iraqi leaders appeared deadlocked on naming new interior and defence ministers seen as critical to restoring stability in a country bloodied by relentless insurgent and sectarian killings.

Police said gunmen manning a makeshift checkpoint near Udhaim stopped cars approaching the small town 120 km north of Baghdad and killed passengers.

The victims included youths of around 15-16 years who were on their way to the bigger regional town of Baquba to write end of term exams, but also elderly men, they said.

"(The attackers) dragged them one by one from their cars and executed them," said a police official.

The killings took place in Diyala province, scene of frequent attacks by insurgents waging a campaign of bombings and shootings to topple the U.S.-backed, Shi'ite-led government.

Some tried to flee but were gunned down, a police source said. Reuters photographs showed six men shot in the chest, including one old man and five young men.

In Iraq's south, a Sunni religious group accused security forces in the Shi'ite-run city of Basra of killing 12 unarmed worshippers in a mosque early on Sunday, but police said they had returned fire and shot dead nine terrorists.

The incident came just hours after a car bomb killed 28 people in Basra, challenging a state of emergency declared by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to crack down on criminal gangs and Shi'ite factions whose feuding threatens oil exports.

It was among the worst violence Iraq's second city has seen since U.S.-forced invaded to topple Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Communal violence has mounted throughout Iraq since the February bombing of a Shi'ite shrine, touching off a wave of revenge killings that sparked fears of civil war.

The United States, which has 130,000 troops in Iraq, hopes Maliki's broad coalition of majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis and Kurds will be able to defuse the violence.

Chemical bomb suspects deny attack plot

LONDON (Reuters) - Two brothers suspected of plotting to make a chemical bomb for an attack in Britain have denied all accusations, their lawyers said on Sunday, as police continued to search their home.

The men, aged 23 and 20, were held during a dawn raid on Friday when more than 250 police officers, stormed their house in east London.

The 23-year-old brother was shot in the shoulder during the raid.

Specific intelligence had suggested the house might have been used to make a toxic bomb for an attack in Britain, police sources said.

"He says there's absolutely not a word of truth in any of it," the wounded brother's lawyer Kate Roxburgh told reporters. "He says the police are not going to find anything because there is nothing to find.

His brother's lawyer, Julian Young, said earlier his client had also denied he was involved in any terrorism plot, adding: "To date I have seen no evidence showing that he has been.

Both men are being questioned at London's top security Paddington Green police station after the wounded brother was moved there from hospital on Sunday.

Police said they were still concentrating their search on the suspects' house in Forest Gate, an ethnically mixed area with a sizable Muslim population. They searched the men's work places on Saturday.

Officers are looking for "some form of viable chemical device" that could kill -- a conventional bomb laced with toxic material, a police source told Reuters.

British firearms police have been under the spotlight since they shot dead an innocent Brazilian man, Jean Charles de Menenezes, in the weeks following last year's suicide attacks.

Young said the case struck him as similar to the Menenezes shooting.

Asan Rehman, a spokesman for a family arrested from a neighbouring house but then freed, told Reuters the two brothers, were Muslims and of Bangladeshi origin.

Excuse me but .......... 250 Police do not search a house with out good reason. This maybe a very 'touchy' place since July last year, but I cannot see that there was no cause for concern.

Bangladeshis are not the worlds richest people, but within hours of the raid their "team of legal advisors" were making claims that they could not possibly of substantiated. I don't understand why they need separate lawyers, unless the is a danger that one will "roll over" on the other.

Of course they would deny any involvement in any terrorist plot, wouldn't they?

And as for Julian Young saying that this is similar to the Menenezes shooting, maybe we should just revisit that case, Menenezes was not necessarily the angel his family would have you believe.
But who’d have guessed that an illegal alien, passport forger, tax-evader and general all-round crook like de Menenezes might also be a sexual predator? Not one of the seventeen-thousand-or-so of his cousins, that’s for sure.

Just because there is no evidence found all that really means is they can't be prosecuted.

There are times when the protection of the democracy is more important than the rights of a few.

Prescott gives up free mansion

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Tony Blair's loyal £130,000 salary and Dorneywood, the historic so-called "grace and favour" country mansion that came with his job.

Newspapers had another field day when he was then photographed playing croquet on the mansion's lawn during working hours. Several of Labour Party parliamentarians openly called for Prescott's resignation.

Prescott said he had told Blair he had personally decided he no longer wanted to use the house.

"I have accepted that my continued use of Dorneywood is getting in the way of doing my job in government," he said in a statement. "I am well aware that my use of it is now a subject of public controversy and criticism and a matter of concern amongst some MPs and the Labour Party.

Prescott, a former ship's steward and union activist, has been an asset to Blair for his gruff working-class background and the loyalty he brings from party stalwarts.
He made headlines when he punched a demonstrator who threw an egg at him on the campaign trail in 2001 national elections.

Excuse me but........ Now that John Prescott is not living there, what numpty is going to be 'given' that house or is the country going to have to pay for it's upkeep to keep it empty.

Of all the people that we could have as No 1 Prescott is the only one that would get my vote. At least you know that he will give good account of himself in a toe-to-toe stand up. Yeah sure he is rough around the edges, but he is one of the ordinary people.

LONDON (Reuters) - The government unveiled ambitious plans on Thursday to make people work until they are 68 and encourage them to save in an effort to defuse a pensions time bomb.

In the biggest shakeup of the pensions system in 60 years, the government endorsed an experts' plan to automatically enrol workers into a national pension savings scheme to help close an estimated 57 billion pound ($107 billion) savings gap.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said the plan "gives us a chance of having a really strong, sustainable, workable, affordable way of people saving for their retirement.

Like many other European countries, Britain faces a huge pensions challenge with an estimated 7 million people not saving enough for their old age. Rising lifespans and low birthrates have worsened the problem.

Opposition parties broadly supported the Labour government's plans, which are based on the recommendations of a pensions commission chaired by Adair Turner, who has combined careers in business, public policy and academia.

Excuse me but...........successive governments have totally mis-managed this country's pension system. Those people who have been paying for their pension through the government system, are now being asked to fix the problem by paying more and working longer to get a better pension with little if any real cost to the government.

The 'new plan' to automatically enroll workers in a pension saving scheme is not new at all. It was first designed in post war Britian. It was called the Social Welfare System. All Tony the Fuqwit is doing is re-selling the package we already have at a greater cost.

How about the new scheme is introduced with the government giving back all we have paid in and start afresh.

In reality Tony doesn't give a rats arse because his pension, and the pensions of his brothers in office, is index linked through a system that the rest of us are told is no longer sustainable. Way to go Fuqwit!

Africa holds rich world to account

ABUJA (Reuters) - Rock star Bono met Chancellor Gordon Brown at a run-down Nigerian primary school on Monday, as Africa moved to hold the rich world to account over promises to fund a "Marshall Plan" for the continent.

Some ceilings at Ido Sarki School, on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital, had collapsed and about 150 children crowded onto benches in one classroom, illustrating the scale of the task required for the poorest continent to deliver basic education to all within nine years.

"Education for every child is the most cost-effective investment the world could ever make," Brown said, adding that every extra year of schooling also had measurable impact on a country's health and prosperity.

African finance ministers invited Brown and Bono to a conference in Abuja where they followed up on last year's meeting of the Group of Eight rich nations which promised to double aid to Africa by 2010.

Development campaigners say the rich world is already falling behind on promises to fund a development plan on the scale of the Marshall Plan that helped rebuild Europe after the Second World War.

Excuse me but......If I recall correctly a number of African nations have OIL. What are they doing to improve their lot. Precious bloody little it seems. They should not blame the western countries for the greed of their own government.

More oil dollars/aid dollars end up in private bank accounts than where it belongs, invested in the infrastructure and the people.

It is easier to blame someone else for your own short comings, than own up to the truth.

Bono urges Africa to tackle corruption

ABUJA, Nigeria (Reuters) - The recent goodwill of wealthy industrialised countries towards Africa could dissipate unless the continent tackles corruption, rock star and activist Bono told African finance ministers on Sunday.

"There is a window of opportunity but it could close if things like the corruption issue are not tackled or the peer review mechanisms are not felt to be real," the U2 frontman said in the Nigerian capital Abuja in one of his first speeches that emphasised malfeasance on the continent.

"The single biggest obstacle to business and the renewal of the economies in the south is corruption and the single biggest obstacle to getting start-up money for those businesses, if you want to look at aid as investment, is corruption.

Rich nations pledged last year to double aid to Africa by 2010 and cancel debts of some poorest countries, but Bono said those promises could be withdrawn if recipient governments weren't clean.

"The small 'c' in corruption is a plague as deadly as the HIV virus and it is not just the businessman, the ones that are hurt the most are always the ones that have nothing," he said.

Excuse me but....................... A very valiant attempt, Bono, but it could take 50 years or more to sort this problem. Corruption is rife from the top down. In order to stop it the government has to really want it and the government are the most corrupt of all. As long as countries like Angola and Nigeria are rich in oil there will be corruption. Certainly my many Nigerian friends are saying that the oil has made no difference to their lives. Greedy men in power with 'tribal mentality' will always see their position as supreme and above the Law, the People, and more important poverty.

President Jo Bloggs doesn't give a toss about the starving millions as long as he can filter away his pension millions. In fact if Western countries give aid he doesn't have to worry about them, just take his 'cut'.

If he had to live on a couple of kilos of maize for weeks in the most appalling conditions then, and only then, he may see the error of his ways.

I live in a very oil rich country. The poverty here is often appaling. The oil belongs to the country, the people. It is the moral responsibility of the countries leaders to ensure that poverty in their country is eradicated using the resources at hand.

Asia typhoon kills 104

HANOI (Reuters) - A typhoon that raked the South China Sea has killed at least 104 people, and Vietnamese officials said on Saturday that more than 160 fishermen were still missing and feared dead.

Typhoon Chanchu, the strongest on record to enter the South China Sea in May, the start of the storm season, left a trail of destruction through China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

"The Da Vinci Code" as some Catholics vowed coast-to-coast protests against the film.
Moreover, the film, directed by Ron Howard, has generated a level of publicity and media hype unseen since Mel Gibson 'The Passion' of the Christ" arrived in theatres two years ago.

Industry experts predicted that, like the controversy Gibson stirred with his graphic depiction of Christ's crucifixion in "The Passion," the debate over "The Da Vinci Code" has only heightened interest in Howard's film.

"There's just so much awareness and interest in this film," Regal spokesman Dick told Reuters. "I think people want to go see it and make up their own minds what they think of the movie.

The Vatican has labelled the story blasphemous and launched its own public relations offensive against the film. A Catholic lay organisation, the American Society for the Defence of Tradition, Family and Property, took out full-page ads in USA Today calling for worshipers to stage prayer vigils outside at least 1,000 theatres nationwide on Friday.

"In all 50 states, we have organisers," said Francis Slobodnik, who is coordinating the campaign for the Pennsylvania-based group and called the film "an insult directed towards God.

Excuse me but ........ If the catholics don't want to see the film then they should not go to see it. To prevent a perfectly legitimate art form from being shown only goes to show what I have believed for a long time. Religion is not about God, but about keeping the masses under control.

The Vatican has had it's day, what it thinks is no longer going to be foisted on the majority.

At the end of the day this film is not being portrayed as a totally factual work, rather a film based on a thin tissue of facts that may or may not be proveable. As with all films the truth is rarely interesting and has to be spiced up to sell to the mass audience.

I have serious doubts about "The American Society for the Defence of Tradition, Family and Property. Probably defending their dubious control over those who have no where else to go.

U.S. House pushes Britain to probe Finucane murder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives called on Britain on Thursday to comply with an agreement with Ireland and start a full investigation of the 1989 murder of Northern Ireland attorney Pat Finucane.

The House voted 390-31 for a resolution urging Britain to establish a full "independent public judicial" inquiry into the murder of Finucane, a human rights attorney gunned down in his home in Belfast in front of his wife and three children.

Some human rights groups have connected loyalist paramilitaries and British security forces with the murder.

In 2001, the British and Irish governments jointly appointed Peter Cory, a retired justice of Canada's Supreme Court, to determine whether independent commissions should investigate possible state-sponsored collusion in six murders, including Finucane's.

Cory made his recommendation for an inquiry commission, but the British government instead said it would conduct a more limited probe of Finucane's slaying.

New Jersey Republican Rep. Chris Smith, who sponsored the measure, said he hoped "our combined efforts here and in the Republic of Ireland will move the British government to finally live up to their agreement ... and help secure public and international confidence in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Excuse me, a very sad event, but............... WTF has this got to do with America. IIRC at the time this happened Americans were still funding 'Terrorist' activities in Northern Ireland via NOR-AID, and would probably stilll be doing that now if it wasn't for 9/11.

Blair asks Musharraf to stop Briton being hanged

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Britain asked Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf on Thursday to stop the hanging of a British man convicted of shooting dead a taxi driver 18 years ago.

Mirza Tahir Hussain, from Leeds, is due to face the gallows on June 3, two days after his 36th birthday, having spent half his life in jail.

"The British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett, on her behalf and on behalf of Prime Minister Tony Blair, has written a letter to President Musharraf requesting him to commute the death sentence of Hussain to an appropriate term of imprisonment," a British diplomat in Islamabad told Reuters.

Hussain, who is of Pakistani descent and according to Pakistani officials holds dual nationality, was arrested in Rawalpindi in 1988.

He was charged with murdering and robbing a taxi driver who he says had tried to physically and sexually assault him. Hussain maintained that the man had pulled a gun on him and it went off during a struggle.

Hussain was acquitted by the country's High Court but an Islamic Court -- the Federal Shariat Court -- sentenced him to death by hanging in 1998. The sentence was later upheld by the country's Supreme Court in 2003, and a review petition was rejected a year later.

Several British parliamentarians have pleaded for Pakistan to exercise mercy, while the London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission said there had been a "miscarriage of justice".

Excuse me but.......... I can believe this story. I have been in some taxis with some very dubios characters in this neck of the woods.

What I do not understand is what has it got to do with Tony Blair? If you take the nationality of another country this should be conditional on that being your country and your only country. This young man took British citizenship but retained his old passport and citizenship. Why?

Did he not really like UK? Did he just want the protection of a British passport? What?

He was tried under Pakistani Law as a Pakistani, he was tried under Sharia Law as a Moslem. What has this got to do with Britian. If Mirza wanted the protection of his British passport he should have given up his Pakistani Passport.

The British Passport is not a toy. It should not be used as a 'GET OUT OF JAIL FREE' card as and when one choses.

If you want a passport from my country then by all means, if you qualify, take it. Please don't use it as your 'ace in the hole'. You only belittle the status it has for others.
